First of all the fantastic and yes, sensual, tuberose has been the inspiration for great fragrances from mainstream to niche and back. From Avon’s ‘Candid’ and Bath and Body Works ‘Velvet Tuberose’ over Tommy Hillfiger’s ‘Dreaming Pearl’ passing by Caron’s ‘Tubereuse’, Dior’s ‘J’Adore’ over Killian’s ‘By Love’ to Serge Lutens ‘Tubereuse Criminelle’. I deliberately omit Clive Christians obscenely expensive ‘C for women’. No fragrance, even if it is liquid gold sprinkled with diamonds and sapphires and rubies and emeralds can be worth as much IMHO. I mean tuberose is one powerful and loved fragrance note that produces powerful and opulent, rich, ‘Here I Am’ fragrances.

No wonder tuberose is considered since many centuries as an aphrodisiac and has been used for ages by ladies to seduce men. With a 9. 9% success rate, I might add. I am a man. And if I would smell a woman wearing Malle's 'Carnal Flower', my heartbeat would certainly start racing.

The tuberose smell is at the time sweet, earthy, intoxicating, strong, creamy, a bit indolic (‘dirty’ meaning musky- flowery version ), heady… It has without a doubt the strongest white floral smell of all. Stronger than jasmine and all the rest. Tuberose is the Queen Bee of Flower Power. Of course, this also means that this Queen Bee has the inclination to dominate everything and to eat every other fragrance note in the near and far distance up and spit it out in a heartbeat. It has to be a strong combo that keeps the tuberose from devouring every other fragrance note and bring her unique character in moderation to the surface, when she smells best. Too much tuberose is overkill. So it is quite a challenge to build a fragrance around the mighty Queen Bee Tuberose.

Luckily we see that the nose behind the 'Libidinous Flower' is none other than Dominique Ropion. Together with Annick Menardo, the best nose for the moment IMHO. Ropion has already an impressive CV.

Some of his work: Mugler’s‘ Alien’, Viktor and Rolf's ‘Flowerbomb’, Ralph Lauren's legendary ‘Safari’, Givenchy’s ‘Amarige’, Dior’s ‘Pure Poison’, Calvin Klein’s ‘Euphoria’, Vivienne Westwood’s ‘Anglomania’… I mean, the man is no nameless celebrity frag lab technician, but a full blown artist and maitre parfumeur. And no snob at that because he also made Jennifer Lopez’ ‘Live’, one of the few celeb frags with an own face, Cacharel's legenadary 'Amor Amor'.. Escada’s. So the man is an all round flexible master perfumer. But what you see in all his creations is that Ropion is the undisputed master of high quality flowery fragrances: jasmine in ‘Alien’ and ‘Pure Poison’, all the flowers in yes… Flowerbomb, peony in J Lo’s 'Live', narcissus and hyacinth in Ralph Laurens Safari, rose in Westwood’s ‘Anglomania’, orchid in ‘Euphoria’… Where Menardo is the undisputed modern master of mixing original fragrance notes and spices, Ropion is the undisputed master of high quality flower- perfumes. And Frédéric Malle’s ‘Carnal Flower’ is one of his less known but finest works.

I have long had the wish to write a review, but was too damn scared, because taking on the Mighty Tuberose in a review is daunting.
