Bloom Times for Asiatic Lilies and Day Lilies. Hardy in U. S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 through 9, Asiatic lilies are some of the earliest blooming members of the Lilium family. Day lilies are also prized for their hardy nature and prolific blooming, but they are not true members of the lily family. They belong to the genus Hemerocallis. Asiatic lilies and day lilies have different blooming times. Asiatic Lily Blooms. Asiatic lilies feature flowers that open towards the sky. The blooms are available in a wide range of colors and are often. Each long, tall stem is lined with small, thin leaves and tipped with a clump of large flowers. Most cultivars do not have a fragrance, but they are still desirable for the fact that they do not have to be staked, for their overall durability and for their early blooming time. Most Asiatic lilies bloom in May or June, depending on the cultivar and climate. A few bloom in July. Asiatic Lily Care. Asiatic lilies grow best in U. S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 through 9, although some cultivars can grow in USDA zone 3 with winter protection. They need well draining soil or their bulbs may rot, and they should be planted in holes that are about three times as deep as the height of the bulb. Asiatic lilies thrive in full sunlight and rich, slightly acidic soil. To encourage reblooming, gently remove the flower heads when they start fading, but leave the stems and foliage to die back to the ground. This ensures that nutrients are returned to the bulb. Day Lily Blooms. Day lilies are part of the Hemerocallis family, which means. This means that as one flower is fading, another one is opening. The flowers begin to bloom in the spring and may bloom well into autumn, depending on the cultivar. The flowers grow in clumps and spread as they mature, which takes about three to four years. Mature clumps can produce as many as 4. With more than 3. Staggering the cultivars ensures that your blooms last for months. Day Lily Care. Day lilies are among the easiest perennials to grow. They can grow in most soils, are drought resistant and can even tolerate wet soil occasionally, although they do best in soil that drains well. An inch or so of water per week is ideal. Day lilies enjoy full sun or partial shade and grow best in USDA zones 3 through 9. The hardiness zones vary a bit by cultivar, so check the tag for a plant that thrives in your area before you buy it. Bright colored cultivars do best in full sun, while pastel flowers, in general, do best with some afternoon shade. Daylilies are relatively pest free, and insect control methods are not usually necessary, according to the University of Minnesota Extension.
